"And that was Stewart Falls"

What are men compared to rocks and mountains... oh yes indeed. (Pride and Prejudice movie)

On July 4th we took the campers to go hike Stewart Falls. It was a rather easy hike (compared to say, Squaw Peak- that's another story) and the scenery was gorgeous.

Stewart Falls- we hiked to the base

And then, while hiking back, we saw a helicopter pass by. Oh dear... we realized later that it was for one of our counselors! I thought he was bringing up the rear, and hadn't realize that he actually fell. What happened was that at the base of the hike, he climbed up this rock wall that wasn't marked out (very stupid thing to do), and while coming down, he slipped and fell about 10 feet. It was enough to knock him unconscious for a short while (5 minutes) and enough to get the ambulance to fly in a helicopter to save him, and the news to report it their TOP STORY for the holiday. I would sound more serious if it wasn't for the fact that
1) They called him a "mountain climber"- he wasn't. He'd never even been to Stewart Falls before
2) They said he fell about 30 feet (not quite true)
3) They said he couldn't answer basic questions- He said they asked questions that could be answered in different ways like, "Are you okay?" "Yeah I'm okay, but not my leg..."
4) They made it sound like he broke his leg and that his concussion was very serious- in the end all he suffered from was a sprained ankle.

Don't get me wrong- I'm not dissing the news. It's just that the way the story was framed (and exaggerated) was funny, especially since it was one of our counselors. Unfortunately they archived the article and video, but here are some pictures.

The best part? His last name is STEWART.
Get it? Stewart Falls...
